Warming Up Before Strength Training!

Warming Up Before Strength Training!

Do you warm up before you do your strength training routine?

Powertec.com says that “Warming up before weight lifting is like turning the key in your car’s ignition—it gets the engine running smoothly before you hit the road. Just as you wouldn’t rev your car’s engine without a proper warm-up, your body deserves the same attention and care to prepare for the physical demands of lifting weights. By dedicating time to a comprehensive warm-up, you prime your muscles for performance and set the stage for a safer, more effective workout”.

According to Ironbullstrength.com “Neglecting your warm-up can lead to injuries, setbacks, and hindered performance”.

When it comes to strength training, what you do before and after a workout are just as important as the workout itself.

Warming up prepares the body for physical demands ahead, helping you reduce the risk of injury.

By gradually increasing your heart rate and circulation, you deliver more oxygen and nutrients to your muscles.

It also enhances flexibility, and improves joint mobility, allowing for safer movement during strength exercises.

Ways to Warm Up!

Sometimes we have a habit of rushing through our workouts without warming up, and doing so can lead to injury.

Here are some ways to take a few minutes and incorporate a light warm up.

🚴 Spend 5-10 minutes doing something that’s low intensity like walking, cycling, or using an elliptical.
💪🏼 Do controlled, full-range motions like arm circles, leg swings, or torso twists.
đźš´ For upper body you could use light resistance bands for upper-body exercises like banded passthroughs, banded bent over rows, or pull-aparts.
💪🏼 For lower-body you could do banded side steps, clamshells, wall sits, or glute bridges.
đźš´ You could also do cat and cow stretches or ankle circles to help lubricate the joints.

Your warm-up time doesn’t have to take long or feel like a workout in itself.

The goal is to prepare your body without depleting your energy the you need for your workout.

Post Workout!

How to Cool Down After Strength Training!Once you’ve completed strength training, it’s helpful to dedicate a few minutes to low-intensity cardio, such as walking or slow cycling to reduce lactic acid buildup in your muscles.

If you have more time, you can extend this to 30-40 minutes of very low-intensity bike riding or walking, as long as it doesn’t significantly raise your heart rate.

You could also do some stretching, to promote muscle relaxation.

A cool-down phase can help with recovery and may also lessen post-workout soreness.

So, basically, the warm-up sets the tone for a successful workout, and the cool-down ensures your body begins the recovery process.

Dedicating a few extra minutes for preparation and restoration helps build strength more effectively and stay injury-free.

Remember, strength training is a long-term journey, and taking care of your body before and after each workout is the key to lasting progress.

Remember that before you start a workout routine, speak to a personal trainer so they can help you reach your goals.
