Pausing Before Responding!

Pausing Before Responding!

When someone you know asks you to go somewhere, spend time with them, or help with a task, do you respond immediately?

Many times, when it’s something we want to do, we agree to the request. We also agree out of nervousness or guilt.

I’ve been guilty of this.

But what if you aren’t sure if you want to commit?

Delay a Response!

How to Delay a Response!Instead of agreeing to do something or giving a hard no, I’m going to share with you a few ways to delay a response.

âś‹ Let me think about it and I’ll get back to you.
đź‘‹ Can I get back to you?
âś‹ I’m not sure I can make that work, let me get back to you.
đź‘‹ When do you need to know by?
âś‹ How late can I let you know?
đź‘‹ Here’s what I can do instead.
âś‹ I can let you know later.

Avoid an immediate response by delaying with a simple pause.

According to TinyBuddha.com “If you’re hard-wired to react immediately, it’s a case of reminding yourself that it’s ok to wait. Giving yourself even a few extra seconds before reacting can make a difference. Pressing the pause button gives you a chance to rewind, make a good choice, and then press play again to continue in a better way”.

Pausing before committing to something, prevents impulsive decisions and allows time to consider other options, weigh pros and cons, and reflect on our decision.

Taking time to evaluate the request allows us to make informed decisions.

Pausing is also great way to practice boundaries and prioritize which commitments most align with our values, in an honest way.

Kind Ways to Decline!

Of course, if we simply have no desire to do what’s asked of us, there are kind ways we can decline and here are 10 ways to do that!

1. I love you and no thank you.
2. It’s not really my thing, but thank you for inviting me!
3. It sounds like fun, but I can’t make it.
4. Maybe next time.
5. I don’t think I’m the right person to help you.
6. Thanks for thinking of me, but I can’t.
7. I’m sorry, I’m not available.
8. I won’t be able to make it, but have a great time!
9. Unfortunately I can’t.
10. I’m sorry, I can’t commit to anything else right now.

Setting boundaries by pausing or saying no, shows respect and is an excellent form of self-care.

The next time you’re faced with this type of situation, no need to feel guilty, just remember you can be authentic and reply in a respectful and kind manner.
