Other People’s Advice / Opinions!

Other People's Advice / Opinions!

Recently, I was on a group zoom call with people I know and they wanted me to share what I was up to.

So, I spoke about what I’d been doing and someone mentioned that I had written a couple of books.

During that conversation, I said I was in the process of promoting one of them.

As soon as I said that, a few individuals decided it would be helpful to offer advice as to how I should go about promoting the book.

It was very kind of them, but honestly I would never do the things they were suggesting.

At the end of the call, I thanked them for the suggestions, but left feeling overwhelmed, and like what I was doing was wrong.

Before the call, I had it all figured out and boom, the information given to me put me in a state of confusion!

Do Others Really Know What’s Best for Us?

Do Others Really Know What's Best for Us?Being human, we seek approval from one another sometimes, thinking someone else knows what’s best for us.

When you ask for opinions or advice, or maybe not, people will offer up ideas!

Other people’s opinions are based on their own thoughts and experiences, and also on their past, limitations, and fears.

When we’re easily influenced by others, we tell ourselves that they know more about our lives than we do!

Not so!

I learned long ago to generally stop asking for opinions, because of the stress it creates.

However, sometimes well meaning people will still offer what they think is best!

No worries!

Once we receive an opinion or advice, we can choose to take the advice or not, respond kindly, and move on.

Here’s What to Say!

Here are 10 examples of what to say when someone offers an opinion or advice:

🌺 Thank you, I’ll consider that.
🌺 I appreciate you explaining this to me, thank you.
🌺 That’s a different perspective, thank you.
🌺 I see what you mean.
🌺 You have a point!
🌺 Great suggestion, thank you.
🌺 Thanks for the input.
🌺 I will give it some thought, thank you.
🌺 Thank you for sharing what’s worked for you.
🌺 Thank you for taking time to explain that to me.

You Have a Choice!

Advice! Take it or Leave it?Trained professionals give opinions frequently, and we respect their opinions based on their knowledge.

Even so, we can manage our own thinking by choosing to listen and take action…or not.

Again, if someone offers an opinion, you have a choice.

You can agree or disagree, and be grateful for the information.

Remember that while advice and opinions can be valuable, the ultimate responsibility for making decisions and taking action is yours.

Considering different perspectives is great, and you get to maintain control of your own path.

Trust your own judgment, and make choices aligning with your values.
