Fireworks and Fur Babies!

Fireworks and Fur Babies!

It’s that time of year again and what would the fourth of July be without fireworks and happy gatherings? This holiday is a great way to connect with family and friends, but what about our fur babies?

Many dread the 4th because the loud noises that come with this holiday are hard on our pets, and it’s heartbreaking!

Fireworks, picnics and other Fourth of July traditions can be great fun for people; but all of the festivities can be frightening and even dangerous for animals” according to the AVMA.

The noise from the loud booms and pops, and flashing lights, can trigger them causing anxiety or extreme stress.

Signs of distress in our pets, can show up as excessive panting, drooling, or hiding.

If you know your furry friend is affected by fireworks, talk to your vet as soon as you can and get their recommendations.

Don’t wait until the day before the 4th to have a plan in place.

Ideas to Keep Your Pets Safe!

Here are 12 helpful ideas to make your furry friends more comfortable during fireworks:

  1. Give your pets a few drops of Rescue Remedy (as directed by your vet) as it’s supposed to reduce pet stress without the side effects found in sedatives.
  2. Keep your pets on their normal diet.
  3. If you already know your pet is anxious, your vet may be able to prescribe anti-anxiety meds.
  4. Keep pets inside with loud soothing music.
  5. Take your pet for a ride away from the noise.
  6. Don’t leave pets in the yard, keep them inside with the doors and windows tightly closed.
  7. Ask neighbors if they plan to display fireworks so you know what to expect in your neighborhood.
  8. Confirm that there are no holes in your fence, just in case your pet tries to escape.
  9. Keep a current photo of your pets in your phone.
  10. If you haven’t done so, get your pet microchipped and registered with Home Again.
  11. Don’t walk your dogs during firework displays.
  12. If you know your fur baby will have a bad reaction to loud noises, expect to stay up with little sleep.

You can also find a place online where you can find the sound of fireworks.

This way you can expose your pets to the sounds of booms and pops so they can get used to the sounds beforehand.

Keep Your Fur Babies Safe!

Keep Your Fur Babies Safe from Fireworks!July 5th is one of the busiest days at animal shelters, due to pets running away from home.

Remember that some pets are extremely anxious and sensitive to noises, so it’s best to do whatever it takes to keep your pets safe.

Another important note is when you’re walking your dog the day after fireworks, make sure they don’t ingest debris!

The says that “When roaming the yard after a firework display, dogs may ingest debris or pieces of used fireworks, which contain dangerous chemicals, such as heavy metals, sulfur, and coloring agents. Eating fireworks can cause serious health issues for dogs, such as gastrointestinal distress or even muscle and nerve dysfunction, which can result in permanent damage“.

Our fur babies are our family members, so please do everything you can to protect them.
